In the next section, we are going to talk about Pingbacks and Trackbacks. In the blogosphere, especially for the users with their websites on the Content Management System, a lot of confusions and we get a lot of questions about what exactly they are. So, Pingbacks and TrackBacks are automated ways that blogs can communicate with each other.

They are the terms we used, pretty much interchangeably these days. They used to be more distinct from each other. But, these days, they are very much similar. So we are just going to refer to them as Trackbacks. So, the way that they work is just from linking to other blog posts. So, for example, if we write a post and we are going to go now, this is a music blog that we have. So, if we write a post and in that post, we make a reference to a different blog post on different websites. And, we refer simply by including a link to that post in our blog.

So, you can here in this post, we are referencing another blog. Right here and so what happens is when we create that link to that blog post that other blog will get a notification in their dashboard. In that comment section, that lets them know that our blog has linked to them and that’s a trackback. So, it will show up in that comment section. And, they get to approve it or choose not to approve it. Just as they would any other comment in this case.

They did approve it, so what happens is that if we scroll down to the comments section. This is the blog post that we created the link to in the comment section. you can see that there’s an excerpt of what we wrote along with the link back to our website. So, what’s happened here is that in an automated fashion, we have created a link from this other website back to our website.

And, it all happened automated. All that we had to do was create this link also. Just to clarify, the link has to be to a specific blog post on another website. If you just link to that home page, it’s not going to work. So, what this means is that you can use these references, strategically to gain more exposure for your blog in the form of a link. In that other blogs, comments, of course, it’s upto that other blogger as to whether they choose to approve that or not. But, if you are making a legitimate reference in many cases, they will approve it and you get a link back to your website. So, we can show you also how this works the other way around.

So, this is a post that we wrote on our blog and what happened is that another blogger referred to this post on his blog. He did that over here. So, you know, quoted part of the post and then he included the reference with a link back to our post. So, what happened is that – then showed up in our Dashboard under the comments. And, we decided to approve it because it was legitimate.

So, we approved it and it shows up in the comments for this post and here you could see the title of this post and there’s a link that goes to his website. For our website, so now we have got a mutual link here. this is the one from his website and then he gets the links back in the comments section on our post. Well, that’s basically how Pingbacks and Trackbacks work. You may find as you continue to blog that you do get some spambots trying to gain this system.

Just to get backlinks, so you will see some essentially spam Trackbacks in your comments. Which of course you can just choose to mock those as spam. You don’t have to approve those. So, they don’t appear on your website. So, that’s it. That’s all you needed to know about Pingbacks and Trackbacks. Even after reading this in-depth guide related to How To Disable Self Pings & Delete All Trackbacks on WordPress Website, still, if you are facing any problems or questions regarding the topic i.e. How To Disable Self Pings & Delete All Trackbacks on WordPress Website, please let us know the exact issue in the comment box below.
